We did not taste it. But these lovely creatures were everywhere and this young man was willing to say hello. Some traditional Icelandic food includes many exotic foods not eaten in the states; seal, sheep face and fermented shark. With food being expensive we opted not to taste some of these imagining still requiring a meal if we didn’t like something. We were ready for the additional tapping of rain. What arrived that night was a deluge of rain and the unbelievable wind. It left us a bit unsettled, but dry and slept well, (sort of). The earlier evening darkened early, although it was a little chilly, it was a quiet place to eat our dinner. Having hot vegetable stew, while sitting on camp chairs by a fire or even curled up on the benches inside is perfection. Rain or not, seeing as many waterfalls as time allowed was high on the agenda. We were rested from our night indoors and headed towards the triple falls. Having the opportunity to stretch our legs and actually BE in the trees was rejuvenating. It wasn’t the warm sun southern sun, but the conditions were perfect for a 4 or 5 mile hike. Even Kira (the dog) enjoyed being out and about in the wilderness. Hiking to Triple Falls was only a short rise up to the photo spot. Even with the light shining hard on the water peaks, the blues and greens invited us into the experience. We took our time traveling the mountains to discover as many water falls as possible. While driving through an older part of Brevard, we discovered this well preserved barn with a side bay holding space for a prized possession. These are two adorable southern towns with plenty of shopping and restaurants. Mingling with the residents at the bike shops in town as well as the coffee shop where the locals are always happy to share things about their town. Our preference was Brevard as it is closer to the mountains. The mountain biking areas are plentiful and it has a true community vibe. These adorable little birds are only about 6” tall, live for about 25 years and lay only one egg each of those years. They mate for life and if the mate is lost during the year, they will stay on the island and find another mate to lay an egg with which incubates between 36 and 45 days leaving them on the island for much longer than usual. Fog for miles, quiet for miles and sand for miles without a living soul. PERFECTION! We allowed the dog a free run, against the rules, but she had the time of her life. At 11, she smelled and tossed the remnants of clam shells into the air, dug deep into the sand to find more and then ran around like a puppy. The fog surrounded us not being able to see the top of the boardwalk or the ocean at the same time. Somehow, although it was a little eerie it was also comforting. The Normaway is run by a family with assistance from local and seasonal young adults that helped the family. The young people were so special, friendly and fun which made it hard to stay away from the main part of the cabins. A croquet set was in the yard and the entrance to this lovely property with its tree lined dirt road make you feel invited into a very private kind of hamlet. We did indulge in a bit of breakfast and dinner which is where they served us with these fun amazing cookie like “biscuits”. The Bird islands are inhabited only by birds and the sea around it had seals moving about. Situated off of an inlet leading to the ocean these rock cliffs are so small they are challenging to find on a map. We lucked out with a spectacular, warm sunny day with barely a ripple on the water. Donelda’s tour was the best educational experience to see the little clown birds. Camping high above the pond on a cliff over looking this area. The story we heard from a fellow traveler was that this pond was created when in 1869 tropical storm “Saxby’s Gale” moved through and closed up the opening to the ocean creating the “pond”. It did rain over night and we hoped they had enough rain gear to keep them dry. A raccoon decided to visit during the night and try, without success, to get into the metal box the held the dog food. It did manage to shred a exposed part of a plastic trash bag. Now that our feet are in Old Quebec City, hunger finally hits, and the exploration of the village begins. It is beyond charming. The streets are narrow, and many are cobblestone. Signage hangs into the walkway truly feeling old world. Europe is here, France is here at our feet, yet we KNOW we are still in North America. It is just a little surreal. Taking our time, even through protesting stomachs, we enjoy the smells of pizza, and crepes, coffee and pastries. Ok, I made up that last part because it was too late to smell the pastries, But you get the idea. Opting to walk the length of the first street before making a final decision for dinner and then landing at the door of Le Casse Crepe Breton. The menu varies from sweet to savory offering the palette a healthy or more decadent choice. Each of us chose the crepe that suited our mood and screaming taste buds. Bananes, de Fraise avec chocolat. Not much translation is needed to know that the mix of chocolate and bananas is going to be fabulous, especially with strawberries. For my dinner I opted for a savory dish with melting cheese and seasoned tomatoes on a buckwheat crepe and a salad on the side. This city originated in the 17th century and now although the comforts of home are there, has retained all its original character. A few places we intended to see were closed on Monday.
